History, Mystery and Your Wedding at Upper House, Hayfield
Standing in glorious isolation, Upper House, Hayfield, is located on the side of Kinder Scout, in the Derbyshire Peak District. It’s a dramatic setting and as a wedding venue, it brings a unique atmosphere of wild, English romanticism to the occasion.
History and a Famous Guest
The original farmstead at Upper House dates back to around the 14th century and it was ideally situated at the convergence of various pack horse routes. Sir James Watts, Mayor of Manchester, purchased it as his shooting lodge at the end of the 1800s
Sir James commissioned a programmed of building improvements, creating a formidable estate at which he entertained many notable guests, not least the famous crime novelist, Agatha Christie, who stayed frequently.
The building is a formidable enough structure, creating the impression of being more like a castle than a house, Because of its size and layout, Upper House opens up possibilities for a range of wedding party sizes and arrangements.
Perfect Packages for Individual Weddings
Upper House is a very versatile wedding venue, perhaps surprisingly so given its age and location. But it’s very much geared to providing very individual wedding venue, one that meets the very specific requirements and desires of its guests.
Each wedding is different, and while the setting is the same, the experience will vary. So at Upper House you can have the full concierge wedding experience, where you and your party are carefully tended to and looked after every step of the way.
Here you can be sure that all your arrangements are in place for the big day, from the ceremony through to the wedding breakfast and entertainment.
Alternatively, Upper House is happy to host bespoke weddings. It certainly provides a dramatic, and romantic, backdrop, with its fortress exterior, its gate house, clock tower and courtyard, and its stunning selection of communal and private rooms.
The venue is also licenced for outdoor ceremonies, so you can make the most of this unique setting.
And if you had something more intimate in mind, Upper House also specialises in smaller weddings, capitalising on the capacity of the venue to be able to also provide special, private spaces for ceremonies and gatherings of as few as 20 guests.
With intimate weddings here, nothing gets lost in translation – Upper House really works its magic for you, offering special tasting menus and an excellent level of truly personal service.
